Choosing the right door type for a property development

Patio doors

Popular patio door options include sliding doors, bi-fold doors and French doors. The best option for your development depends on the style of the property, and the level of security you need for the property.

Sliding doors take up less space than other types of aluminium patio doors (as they don’t have to open in or out), so they're a good option if you're working with limited space. They also offer very slim sightline options – for example, the Origin Artisan Slider OS-20 comes with sightlines of just 20mm. Additionally, sliding doors can be easy to install.

Bi-fold doors offer slightly more configuration options than sliding doors, however have slightly larger sightlines. Like sliding doors, they also provide a modern, sleek appearance for a property, which is ideal if you are working on a more modern development.

French doors are a slightly more traditional option when it comes to patio doors for a property development. Like bi-fold and sliding doors, they also offer a large range of colour options and bespoke size options to choose from – so you are guaranteed to find the right choice for your development.

Choosing front doors

When selecting a front door for a property development, you can either choose a Single Front Door, or French Door option. The right choice will depend on the opening size and the overall aesthetic of the property. The doors can also be used in a garage space if required, and the Origin Garage Door is available in the same panel options as the Origin Front Door, helping to bring a property’s style together.

Origin Front Doors can also open inwards or outwards. This allows you to select the best option for the space you have available.

Choosing security options for a door

Bespoke aluminium commercial doors come with a wide selection of locking mechanisms and handles, so your door has all the security provisions you need. You need to consider the following:

  • The type of lock and security level you need

  • The type of handle

  • The handle and lock colours and material durability.

Colour options

The colour option you choose for a door should depend on the style and aesthetic of the property, and the colours of other doors inside or outside of the property. Perhaps you want to match the front door with the patio door colour, for example.

Popular options such as black and white are classic, flexible options that can be suitable for a range of properties. At Origin, a lot of our products are available in 24 hours when ordered in our most popular colours.

Sustainability

Choosing a sustainable door option can improve your reputation as a property developer, and can also provide peace of mind in that you’re doing your bit for the environment. Consider the following when choosing a sustainable external door for a development:

Is the material sustainable?

Consider whether the material used is recyclable and sustainable. For example, aluminium is 100% recyclable, and is one of the most environmentally friendly metals around. Find out more about the benefits of aluminium here.

Accreditations

Does the external door supplier have any notable environmental accreditations to demonstrate their sustainable approach? Origin has ISO 14001 which demonstrates we have a solid environmental management system in place with a focus on continuing to improve on our impact.

Energy efficiency

Ensure the external doors are energy efficient and exceed building regulation requirements. Does the external door meet or exceed thermal efficiency building regulations and standards? You can find out more about the benefits associated with supplying Origin’s products for a development here.

Packaging

Consider whether your chosen door comes with the necessary packaging only, or whether materials are wasted in the packaging process.
